WHY IS GDP PER WORKER AT 2017 LEVELS?
While Canada's workforce has expanded each year, the total economic output this workforce emits has declined since the start of 2021. This is largely due to increasingly unproductive lending practices in Canada's banking system, where there is a concentration of lending to fund transactions which are not recorded in GDP and even subtract from GDP (i.e., existing home purchases, used cars, imported goods and services, etc.). The consequence is widespread and manifests in lower levels of productivity, higher trade deficits (as consumers and businesses bring in more goods and services than they export), lower standards of living (as wages weaken against asset prices), a weaker currency, and the list goes on and on.
Canada must urgently reverse this trend by making sure Canadian banks are primarily lending for productive business activity to significantly boost productivity and increase Canadian standards of living.
